Overview - MS Oosterdam is one of four 'compass-point' HAL ships. In the northern Summer she sails the Alaskan Inside Passage out of Vancouver, and in the northern Winter she relocates to San Diego to sail the waters of Hawaii and the Mexican Riviera. Hallmarks of HAL include spacious staterooms and public areas, rich timber furnishings set with museum-quality paintings and antiques, discreet personal service, and artful itineraries that allow for overnights in key cities. In 2012/13 Oosterdam will relocate to Sydney, Australia, where HAL is expanding its offices and operations.

Accommodation - Of the staterooms, 85% have an outside view, and of these four-fifths have a private balcony. Cabins have twice-daily housekeeping, nightly turn-down service, complimentary shoe-shine and ice service. Standard cabins having a third and fourth pull-down berth or trundle bed are a little small if occupied by three or, four persons. Cabins are spacious and come highly recommended. All include twin/queen bed with excellent bedding, sofa, flat-screen TV running movies, DVD player, fruit by order, bathrobes, hairdryers, make-up mirrors, kit of personal toiletries, shower tubs (only showers for inside cabins), personal safe and various services. The décor is very pleasing and comfortable. Complimentary meals can be ordered for in-suite dining around the clock. There are no single cabins, and 23 that are wheelchair-accessible.

The Penthouse Suites and Deluxe Verandah Suites have the services of a personal concierge and access to the private Neptune Lounge. Suites are lavish, with a full-size bath. The sitting area has a double sofa bed. There are cabins with inter-connecting doors, cabins that are wheelchair-accessible, and no single cabins.

Food & Dining - The ship has seven formal to casual dining areas. The two-deck main Dining Room serves open-seating breakfast and lunch. For dinner chose between set-seating at first or second servings, or open seating on the upper deck. The Master Chef's menus are superb, and waiting staff are friendly Indonesian and Filipino stewards. There are two alternative restaurants, all best to reserve in advance: The Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, and the (no service charge) Italian-American-influenced Canaletto.

The Lido Restaurant has multiple serving stations varying their offerings throughout the day and late evening. The casual Terrace Grill serves all the types of fast food you'd expect. Relax in Explorations Café, a gathering place that mixes together a library and coffee bar where one can check email or read the morning paper.

Entertainment & Activities - At night Las Vegas-style revues are held at the two-deck-high Show Lounge. View movies in the Screening Room. Join in games in the Queen's Lounge. And there's dancing and music all over the ship: sing along at the Piano Bar, dance in the Ocean Bar or the ship's disco Northern Lights, or watch sport in the multi-screen sports bar. The casino is large.

During the day there are four options: well-organised shore excursions; the Culinary Arts Centre with cooking activities; the Digital Workshop that includes photography and making a vacation video; and Mind, Body, Spirit that focuses on fitness, recreation and brain stimulation games. The main pool is one of the most beautiful at sea. For a poolside retreat reserve a day-long private cabana, especially suited to families. The giant Greenhouse Spa includes a range of thermal suites, and gymnasium with circuit-training and fitness classes. Sports include basketball, volleyball and a golf simulation. Children are catered for at Club HAL (for ages 3-7 and 8-12), and teens socialise at The Loft and The Oasis.
