Prinsendam is a world traveller, usually visiting a port-a-day, offering the feel of a classic yacht and the service of a cruise ship. In the coming year explore large and small ports that include the UK, Arctic Norway, ancient Mediterranean empires, the mighty Amazon and the Caribbean. This is a ship for more mature travellers who want classic style cruising and contemporary conveniences. Hallmarks of HAL include spacious staterooms and public areas, rich timber furnishings set with museum-quality paintings and antiques, discreet personal service, and artful itineraries that allow for overnights in key cities.

Last refurbished in 2007, ms Prinsendam berths at ports inaccessible to larger cruise vessels. She has all HAL Signature of Excellence enhancements to her public rooms and staterooms. Mid-ship, guests will find a special signature sculpture suspended in a soaring three-story atrium that features etched fish, turtles and dolphins climbing a stunning cylinder of Bolle glass, lit with state-of-the-art fiber optics. Dining is formal, or “As You Wish”, and cuisine and dining services are above industry standard. Signature touches include afternoon teas, a Royal Dutch High Tea, and an extensive wine selection. Prinsendam appeals to well-educated, well-travelled passengers in their late 50s and older, and singles. Come dress-prepared for formal nights' dining and dancing.

Accommodation
Standard cabins are custom designed, spacious, and very well appointed, for example with walk-in closets, full length bath, and one or two single beds. Some have a third berth, and others have interconnecting doors. A few have a private balcony. All grades of cabins come with a basket of fresh fruit, flat-screen TV running movies, DVD player, fridge, bathrobes, hairdryers, make-up mirrors, kit of personal toiletries, plush bedding, and evening turn-down service. Filipino and Indonesian stewards give friendly and unobtrusive service. The décor is very pleasing and comfortable. Complimentary meals can be ordered for in-suite dining around the clock. Note that there are some single cabins, and four that are wheelchair-accessible. The self-service laundrettes are practical for the longer cruises.

Large ocean-view staterooms come with two beds convertible to king-size. Deluxe Verandah Ocean-view staterooms have a lounge and floor-to-ceiling windows that open to a private balcony. Suites come with personalised cruise stationary, mini-bar, complimentary DVD library, additional shower, and of course more space for entertaining. DeLuxe Verandah Suites add daily hors d’œuvres, breakfast and high tea in-suite, king-size bed, sofa bed, concierge service, dis/embarkation priorities, a cocktail party with the ship’s officers, and access to the exclusive Neptune Lounge. The Penthouse Verandah Suite is delightfully light and airy, with a large dining and entertainment area, and two bathrooms one of which has an ocean-view whirlpool tub.

Food and Dining
The ship has a variety of formal and casual dining areas. The La Fontaine Dining Room with its extensive ocean views serves open-seating breakfast and lunch. There are two seatings at dinner, at assigned tables, set with fine crystal and china ware. One section allows for guests who prefer to dine at their own schedule. The alternative restaurant The Pinnacle Grill is well worth the additional cover charge, with meals served in most elegant settings. The venue specialises in fine steaks and seafoods.

The Lido Restaurant, with indoor and outdoor seating and floor-to-ceiling windows, provides good casual dining and self-serve buffet-style meals. The Terrace Grill on the Lido deck serves a good range of fast food. Relax in Explorations Café, a gathering place that mixes together a library and coffee bar where one can check email or read the morning paper. Room service is offered 24 hours a day.

Entertainment
At night the tiered Queen’s Show Lounge offers twice-nightly quality cabaret acts. Singles and older couples mingle sip drinks in elegant surrounds at the upper deck Crow’s Nest Lounge with its wrap-around views of the ship’s progress, the beautifully crafted Explorer’s Lounge, and the Ocean Bar. Evening entertainment includes the casino.

By day and night there are never-ending activities that include games, selected lectures based on the cruise itinerary, and musical acts and performers encountered around the ship. There is a computer learning centre, and a culinary arts centre offering gourmet cooking lessons and wine-tastings. The attractive Greenhouse Health Spa has six treatment rooms that offer all the traditional spa and beauty salon features. The small gymnasium comes with modern equipment and supporting programs. There are also a jogging course, croquet and bocce ball courts, and golf putting greens. Children are catered for with a nominal Club HAL program, but the cruises are not marketed to families with children.
