- In the northern summer this large resort ship sails the Alaskan coast, and in the southern summer she relocates to the Pacific region, around the coasts of East Asia, Australia and New Zealand (ex-Sydney and Auckland). Princess ships are well maintained, and project a calmness that attracts families and fellow passengers in their mid 50s and upwards. Children and teenagers are well catered for. The ship offers good cuisine and entertainment, and an excellent shore excursion program. The décor is attractive and there is plenty of space inside the ship. This ship specializes in affordable cabins with a high ratio of balconies.
- Diamond Princess specialises in affordable cabins with balconies. All guests receive turndown service, chocolates on pillow at night, bathrobes and amenity kits. There are six types of cabin and 35 sub-categories. The standard cabins are practical and attractive, many having additional upper berths for children, and some have inter-connecting doors. The larger the stateroom, the more additional facilities. Check the level of privacy your balcony provides. There are two connecting family suites, no cabins for singles, and 28 cabins that are wheelchair-accessible.
Suites (26) and Mini-Suites (186) feature a larger sitting area with settee, adjacent to but not separate from the bedroom area, and a marble bathroom with both shower and tub, as well as a second TV. Suites have a much larger balcony. Keep in mind that some balconies are not entirely private. The one Grand Suite has effectively two entertainment areas and a double balcony area, all great for entertaining. There are no butlers.
- The Princess ships have been inducted into the prestigious Chaîne des Rôtisseurs gastronomic society. Each chef's menu is creative and the selections change every day. There are two main dining rooms, one with Traditional Dining (same time and fixed seating for each meal) and the other with Anytime Dining (sitting when and with whom you choose). Breakfast and lunch are provided in an open seating arrangement. Anytime Dining is offered in the Pacific Moon (Asian), Santa Fe (S-W USA), and Savoy and Vivaldi (Italian fare) Dining Rooms.
The two alternative restaurants (reservations and extra charge) are Sabatini's, which serves an eight-course Italian meal, and Sterling Steakhouse. The Horizon Court and Bistro offer a grand range of buffet food with menus changed daily. Casual eateries include Trident Grill (burgers and hot dogs), Prego's Pizzeria, Vines (for wine and seafood), the 24-hour International Café, and the ice cream bar. Sip coffee in the three-deck-high street-café-style Piazza. Afternoon tea with sandwiches is served daily. 24-hour room service is available, with a limited menu (and small delivery fee). For specials and at additional cost order your Ultimate Balcony Dinner. Look out for the occasional English pub lunch.
- Princess entertainment and the stage shows are very impressive. The Princess Theatre is two decks high, and features regular glamorous production shows. At night Club Fusion presents cabaret acts, has a good dance floor, and run s a talent show called Princess Idol. During the day it doubles for lectures, bingo and horse-racing. Watch first-releases on the pool-side giant screen Movies Under the Stars. Explorers Lounge hosts nightclub-style performances. Skywalkers Nightclub is on the top deck. The casino is one of the largest at sea. Four lounges and bars have live music.
Outdoor activities centre on a number of pools and hot tubs. An adults-only private sunbathing area, the Sanctuary, is at the front of the ship. Work out in the gyms, swim-against-the-current, or practise with a virtual golf simulator or non-hole putting course. The ScholarShip@Sea program presents six self-improvement programs each day, with a charge for advanced classes. The core subjects are: Culinary Arts, Visual/Creative Arts, Photography, and Computer Technology. There is also a pottery studio complete with electric kiln. One can retire to the library and writing room, the adults-only lounge, or relax in a spa or hot tub. Three age groups (3 to 17 years) have five-star special facilities and programs. Teens' Remix features Playstation 2s, movies and music, karaoke, giant screen TVs, games, juke boxes, separate Jacuzzi and sunbathing area, hip-hop dance lessons and mixing their own dance tracks.
